This is not just any ordinary trip – you’ll be riding the historic Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad, which first opened in 1904! Feel the thrill of traveling on rails once used to haul coal and lumber while soaking in the beautiful scenery and rich history. 🚂

What is a Rail Explorer?
A Rail Explorer is a pedal-powered vehicle that rides on railroad tracks. It’s easy, fun, and comfortable to ride, with four steel wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, and pedals for each seat. The magic of steel wheels on steel rails makes this experience very different from riding a regular bike – there’s no need to steer, and you can ride hands-free, making it perfect for taking photos and videos as you roll along.
Rail vehicles date back to the 1850s, when maintenance workers used them to inspect and repair tracks. Today, the rail explorers you'll be riding are the latest in railbike technology – the global leader in safety, design, and ease of operation.
During our journey, you’ll pass by breathtaking sights like the Devil’s Sawmill waterfall and the Sandfork Bridge, all while enjoying the effortless ride provided by the REX Propulsion System.
Event Details:
- Date: Sunday, September 29th
- Departure: 1:30 PM from the front of the Hardaway Building
- Return: 8:00 PM
- What to Bring: A drink and snack to enjoy at our turnaround stop along the Buffalo Creek
- What to Wear: Check the weather forecast! Dress for outdoor activities with comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and closed-toe shoes.
- Important: If you can’t make it and don’t find a replacement, there will be an $58 charge to your student account.
